MASTER ELECTRICIAN

POSITION SUMMARY

The Master Electrician provides technical leadership and permit responsibility for the installation, verification, inspection, and maintenance of fire alarm and life safety electrical systems, ensuring all work complies with the Alberta Safety Codes Act, Canadian Electrical Code, and applicable building and fire codes.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Our company is a fire and life safety services provider specializing in fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, suppression systems, and related code‑mandated inspections throughout Alberta. We support clients in commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi‑residential occupancies with a strong focus on code compliance, reliability, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the designated Master Electrician for the company, holding responsibility for electrical permits and ensuring all permitted work complies with the Safety Codes Act, regulations, and the Master Electrician Code of Ethics.
  • Oversee and sign off on the installation, alteration, and maintenance of fire alarm systems, emergency power for life safety, smoke/CO alarms, and associated electrical equipment.
  • Plan, supervise, and review electrical work performed by journeypersons and apprentices, assigning tasks, setting expectations, and ensuring appropriate levels of supervision based on project risk.
  • Interpret and apply the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC), Alberta Building Code, and Alberta Fire Code as they relate to fire alarm, emergency lighting, and life‑safety systems.
  • Install, modify, and verify fire alarm systems and related low‑voltage circuits, including device layout, conduit and cable installation, terminations, and equipment connections.
  • Perform or oversee rack‑up, programming, and verification of new fire alarm systems, including functional testing, troubleshooting, and coordination with fire authorities and engineering consultants as required.
  • Lead and/or support regular inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) of fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, and other life safety electrical components in accordance with code and manufacturer requirements.
  • Review single-line diagrams, engineered drawings, specifications, and shop drawings for conformance with code and project requirements and provide feedback or corrections where needed.
  • Ensure accurate, timely completion of electronic work orders, test reports, verification documents, and permit documentation for all projects under your responsibility.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to field technicians and apprentices on safe work practices, code requirements, and fire alarm system operation and troubleshooting.
  • Participate in safety program activities, including toolbox talks, hazard assessments, lockout/tagout, and incident investigations, promoting a strong safety culture.
  • Liaise with clients, general contractors, engineers, inspectors, and AHJs (Authorities Having Jurisdiction) to resolve technical issues and ensure smooth inspections and project close‑
  • Maintain current knowledge of changes to codes, standards, and industry best practices related to electrical and fire/life‑safety systems through ongoing professional development.

Required Qualifications:

    • Valid Alberta Master Electrician certification (Safety Codes Council) and eligibility to obtain electrical permits in Alberta.
    • Alberta Journeyperson Electrician (Red Seal) or equivalent recognized certification.
    • Minimum 10 years of post‑journeyperson experience, including substantial experience with fire alarm and life‑safety electrical systems (installation, testing, troubleshooting, and verification).
    • Strong working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code, Alberta Building Code, and related fire/life safety requirements, particularly as they apply to fire alarm, smoke/CO detection, and emergency systems.
    • Valid Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence with an acceptable driving record.
    • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications, and to produce accurate as‑built documentation.
    • Proven experience supervising or mentoring apprentices and coordinating work on active job sites.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • 5+ years of focused experience in fire alarm systems (testing, troubleshooting, verification, and programming) in commercial, institutional, and industrial facilities.
    • Certification or training with major fire alarm manufacturers and/or CFAA (Canadian Fire Alarm Association) certification.
    • Experience with inspection and maintenance of emergency lighting, exit signage, suppression systems, and related life‑safety equipment.
    • Experience working with healthcare, high‑rise, industrial, or other high‑risk occupancies where life‑safety systems are critical.
    • Proficiency with basic computer tools (email, MS Word, Excel, PDF forms, inspection/reporting software).

Skills & Competencies:

    • Strong technical troubleshooting skills for fire alarm panels, initiating devices, notification appliances, and associated electrical circuits.
    • Thorough understanding of safe electrical work practices, including lockout/tagout, arc flash awareness, and elevated‑work safety.
    • Organized, detail‑oriented, and able to manage multiple permits, projects, and deadlines simultaneously while maintaining code compliance.
    • Clear, professional communication skills with clients, inspectors, and internal teams, both verbally and in writing.
    • Leadership mindset with a focus on mentoring, coaching, and building a strong safety and quality culture.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Work primarily at client sites across Alberta, including commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi‑residential buildings.
    • Regular requirement to stand, walk, climb ladders, work at heights, and lift approximately 50–70 lbs while handling tools and materials.
    • Work may include days, and occasional evenings or weekends to meet project and inspection requirements, with participation in an on‑call rotation as needed.

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    • Competitive hourly wage or salary commensurate with experience and qualifications (e.g., typically in line with or above senior journeyperson rates in Alberta fire/life‑safety work).
    • Company vehicle or vehicle allowance, and tools/PPE as per company policy.
